Pol Light #108
is when George W. Bush visited Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas, Texas on November 7, 2014, and he kissed nurse Amber Vinson who had recently recovered from Ebola. George W. Bush was the 43rd President of the United States, serving from 2001-2009.

Here is a video of George W. Bush visiting Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital and meeting Amber Vinson.

The Ebola virus disease is a disease with a high rate of fatalities once a person is infected. It was first discovered to impact humans in 1976 in Africa (Ebola Facts at CNN). The 2014 Ebola epidemic spread to the United States and Amber Vinson caught Ebola as she cared for an infected patient during the course of her duties as a nurse. After Amber Vinson passed the 21 day waiting period to be declared no longer contagious, George W. Bush affirmed her victory over Ebola when he personally kissed her and was not afraid of catching Ebola from her.

George W. Bush Creates W100K Bikeride for Veterans

Pol Light #74 is when George W. Bush created the W100K bike ride for veterans that took place for the first time on April 25-27, 2011.  The event is part of the Bush Center's Military Service Initiative and designed to help not only the group of veterans who are selected to participate in the ride, but also to raise awareness on issues facing all veterans after their military service is concluded.  George W. Bush was the 43rd President of the United States, serving from 2001-2009.

The W100K is an annual event held in the Spring in Texas. The 4th Annual W100K was held on May 1-3, 2014. In 2014, 16 veterans from the Afghanistan and Iraq field joined George W. Bush on a three day, 20 mile mountain bike ride on the trails of Prairie Chapel Ranch in Crawford, Texas. George W. Bush explains the ride by saying on his website,
"I'll be riding across the deserts of Texas with wounded warriors to show the unbelievable character of our men and women in uniform...it's a ride to herald people who were dealt a severe blow and said, 'I'm not going to let it tear me down.'"--George W. Bush (Bush Center, W100K).

The following is video highlights of the first W100K event that took place in 2011.

Here is a news story CNN did on the 2012 W100K event.

George W. Bush Writes Letter to Alabama Kicker

Photo of George W. Bush

Pol Light #69 is when George W. Bush sent a letter on December 3, 2013, to Alabama kicker, Cade Foster, who missed 3 field goals in the Alabama vs. Auburn game on Nov. 30, 2013.  George W. Bush was the 43rd President of the United States, serving from 2001-2009.

On November 30, 2013, Auburn defeated Alabama 34-28 in the 2013 Iron Bowl. Alabama kicker Cade Foster missed 3 field goals which were critical in this close game. In the end Auburn broke a tie at the end of the game when Chris Davis returned Adam Griffith's field goal attempt 109 yards for a touchdown (USA Today, No. 5 Auburn Shocks No. 1 Alabama on Final Play , 11/30/2013).

Because of his missed field goals some sports fans had been giving Cade Foster a hard time on social media. George W. Bush sent him a letter to encourage him.

Here are the words in the letter that George W. Bush sent to Cade Foster a few days after the game.

Dear Cade (#43),

Life has its setbacks. I know!

However you will be a stronger human with time.

I wish you all the best

Sincerely

another 43

Bush and Gore at 2000 Alfred Smith Dinner

Pol Light Moment #57 took place on October 19, 2000, when the two men running for President of the United States shared the stage to support Catholic charities and disadvantaged children. Governor George W. Bush (later to be elected President) and Vice-President Al Gore were joint keynote speakers at the 55th Annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner in New York on October 19, 2000.

Alfred E. Smith was a former Governor of New York, who was the first Catholic Presidential candidate (Source).  During Presidential election years the dinner has frequently featured the candidates for President. The 2000 rendition of this longstanding dinner raised about $900,000 for Catholic charities (Source).
The following is an abbreviated highlight version developed by the Alfred Smith Foundation.

A full version of the speeches at the dinner can be seen in this C-SPAN video below. We apologize but it is not compatible with mobile phones.

George W. Bush's White House Tee Ball Initiative

George W. Bush
Pol Light Moment #33 is when George W. Bush started the White House Tee Ball Initiative in 2001. George W. Bush was the 43rd President of the United States, serving from 2001-2009. After Bush became President in 2001, he had a baseball diamond built on the White House Lawn and it was used to host Tee Ball games at the White House.

Teams were chosen to play at the White House by the Little League Association of America.  Wikipedia describes the White House Tee Ball Initiative this way:
In 2001, U.S. President Bush initiated what he described as the White House Tee Ball Initiative. The purpose was to promote interest in childhood sports, including baseball and softball. According to the White House, the Tee Ball Initiative promoted "a spirit of teamwork and service for America's youth." (Source).
There is an archives of the Presidential website  the way it appeared in 2008 that shows some of the tee ball events. The following video recognizes some of the teams who played at the White House during the George W. Bush presidency.

You can see a photo of a young George W. Bush in his Little League uniform at the Texas State Library and Archives Commission.

George W. Bush's Quiet Service in Zambia

Pol Light Moment #19 is George W. Bush's service trip to Zambia in the first week of July 2012.  George W. Bush was the 43rd President of the United States, serving from 2001-2009.

George W. Bush and his wife Laura visited Zambia in July, 2012 to help build a cervical cancer clinic. The refurbished clinic will be located in Kabwe, the second largest city in Zambia. The clinic will provide a place to screen, diagnose, and treat cervical cancer. George W. Bush has helped raise 85 million dollars for the cervical cancer initiatives through his George W. Bush Center (Source). While in Zambia, George W. Bush also dedicated a teaching hospital in Lusaka, the capital of Zambia. He also visited an orphanage where most of the children were born with AIDS.

At a trip to the clinic in Zambia in July 2012, he said, "I hope you don't see much of it [me]. I don't want to be in the news. In other words I believe that quiet service is the best kind of service."

“I do want to be able to say that on this particular trip, that myself and friends have left behind a clinic in hopes to inspire others to come and refurbish clinics as well and to encourage the Zambian government to make sure there are the healthcare works necessary to make sure the clinic doesn't sit there empty,” Bush said in a video at an event announcing the renovation of Ngungu Health Center. Read more on Newsmax.com: Bush and Wife Laura in Zambia Promoting Cancer Initiative.
